New Love Grows on Trees

Band songlist

Info

New Love Grows on Trees is a song composed by Peter Doherty, with lyrics directly inspired from his friendship with Carl Barat. The song was mentioned in The Books of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty in journal entries dated as early as 1999, and performed by The Libertines during that period, with Mr. Razzcocks on drums. This early version was apparently played considerably faster than the album track released in 2009.

In the version recorded by Doherty and Barat during the Babyshambles sessions in 2003, Barat responds to the lyric, "If you're still alive / when you're twenty-five / shall I kill you like you told me to?" by saying, "I never told you to." Doherty then quickly responds with, "It's just a song!" before continuing to the chorus.

On January 13, 2009, "New Love Grows on Trees" was reported as track #11 on Peter Doherty's debut solo album Grace/Wastelands, released on March 16, 2009. In a January 2009 track-by-track of the album, NME described "New Love Grows on Trees" as "one of the more lyrically deft songs on the album".

Lyrics

Are you still talking to
All of those dead film stars
Like you used to?
And are you still thinking of
All of those pretty rhymes and perfect crimes
Like you used to?

And if you're still alive when you're twenty-five
Oh, shall I kill you like you asked me to?
If you're still alive when you're twenty-five
Oh, would I kill you? You told me to
But I really don't want to
I remember every single thing you said to me
You played the man and I was Calvary
And you said, ah you said,
New love grows on trees
New love grows on trees
New love grows - New love grows on trees
If you please
(And if you don't please)
That makes perfect nonsense to me
That's the price of being free these days
It's ridiculous

Are you still shaking out
All of the deadwood from your bed, love
Like you used to?
Well times don't change
Are you still thinking of
All of those perfect lines for love to bind?
You really don't have to
And if you're still alive when you're twenty-five
Oh, shall I kill you like you asked me to?
If you're still alive when you're twenty-five
Shall I kill you?
You told me to, but I really don't want to

I remember every single thing you said to me
You played the man and I was Calvary
You said, New love grows on trees
New love grows on trees
New love grows on - New love grows on trees
