A Fool There Was

Band songlist

Info

A Fool There Was is a Peter Doherty track, thought to be named after a 1914 film with the same name [1], however this has never been confirmed by Doherty or Babyshambles. A Fool There Was takes some of its lyrics from a much older Libertines song, Bound Together.

The song was first heard by many fans when it was released onto the French Dog Blues website as part of the Stookie + Jim Bumfest Demos. There were, however, some versions of this song before then. For example, when Andrew Kendall uploaded the content of Peter Doherty's "My Music" folder, along with some of his Laptop recordings, in April 2006, it contained a version of this song. In an NPR radio interview [2] broadcast on January 11, 2005, Doherty plays the song for the interviewer after he has trouble speaking about the break-up of The Libertines.

When a photograph of what appeared to be a tracklisting for Dohery's solo album leaked in January 2006 (after the New Years eve guerrilla gig), A Fool There Was was written as Track #4. When Grace/Wastelands was eventually released in 2009, however, the track did not feature.

Lyrics

A fool there was
A fool there was

Incision after incision, I
Spike myself because

If ever a fool there was
I was a fool there was

But you can't put that on me
You can't put that on me
I know what you say about me, and
Well I mostly agree
But you can't put that on me

Fool there was
A fool I was

Decision after decision, I
Spike myself because

If ever a fool there was
I was a fool there was

But you can't put that on me
You can't put that on me
I know what you say about me, and
Well I mostly agree
But you can't put that on me

All your tastes and preferences
They're measured out in Moscow miles, and oh
Wolf prints in the snow
That led us off the straight and narrow

And crooked smiles, that from one too many
Sad goodbyes
They no longer say hello, hello hello, ooh
