Hell To Pay At The Gates Of Heaven is the title of a track from Peter Doherty's second solo album, Hamburg Demonstrations. The song was written following terrorism attacks in Paris in November 2015, in which 130 were killed, many at the Bataclan club during an Eagles Of Death Metal concert. Speaking to The NME Doherty states: “Hell To Pay At The Gates Of Heaven is about the fucking Bataclan. It’s about how we’re under attack."
Doherty added that he was concerned at how young the terrorists who carried out the attacks were. He said: “At that age, when you’re desperate to fight for something, it can catch you off balance. When you’ve got faith and belief, you’ll put as much into it as a lad who’s obsessed with guitars. So the lyrics are ‘Come on boys, choose your weapons/J-45 or an AK-47?’
