I Love You But You're Green is track #2 on Babyshambles' debut EP, The Blinding EP. Even though the song was not officially released until late 2006 by Babyshambles, it is thought that Doherty wrote the track as early as before he joined The Libertines, along with others such as Albion. As well as being recorded for Babyshambles, this song has been recorded at least once with Carl Barat for The Libertines' Babyshambles sessions in May 2003, and recorded many times by Doherty acoustically. Many fans prefer the older versions of this song rather than The Blinding EP release due to the slowed-down-tempo.
A music video for I Love You But You're Green was also released, despite the fact it has not yet been released as a stand-alone single. The video was directed by Julien Temple, and it features the individual band members playing their instruments, never together but at separate locations. Adam Ficek and his drumkit are perched on a traffic island, Drew McConnell is strumming his double bass by a log fire, Mik Whitnall is in a graveyard and Peter Doherty is hanging around, singing and strumming, in front of a run-down wooden shack and later in front of a pile of tyres in an old car yard.
Doherty said on The Culture Show that the lyrics came from a part of Graham Greene's novel 'Brighton Rock,' and 'I Love You But You're Boring,' a song by The Beautiful South.

I was a troubled teen
Who put an advert in a magazine
To the annoyance of my imaginary lover
She doubted my philosophy
And this is what she said to me
She said oh, you, you're green
You don't know what love means
Oh let me tell you
Tickles you pink, oh yeah
But it likes to hear you scream
Fire and damnation, lamentations
For the likes of you
When she goes, just let her go
If she says she's going
Just make sure she goes
Make sure she goes
I was a troubled teen
Untroubled only in my daydreams
To the annoyance of someone or other
She questioned my integrity
And this is what they said to me
Oh, you, you'll soon be up where you belong
But it's only blood from broken hearts that writes the words to every song
Oh a beatific smile
For the fawners and the servants
Oh but I, only I, only I
I can see the serpents
Oh, you, you're green
You don't know what love means
Well let me tell you
It tickles you pink, oh yeah
But it likes to hear you scream
Fire and damnation, lamentations
For the likes of you
When she goes, just let her go
If she says she's going
Just make sure she goes, make sure she goes
When she goes
You just let her go
If she says she's going
Make sure she goes, make sure she goes
